Workshop with William Hall – “Improvisation for Clowns” October 10 and 11

The Clown Conservatory is delighted to offer another year of exciting artistic development opportunities to CIRCUS CENTER students. In this unique workshop series, resident and guest instructors will coach participants on a wide range of topics. The Series is appropriate for students new to the fields of clowning and performance, as well as, those with more experience.

Upcoming Workshop:

October 10 and 11: William Hall – “Improvisation for Clowns”

Two days of Improvisation for the inner and outer clown. Action (not talk) will set the tone of the workshop. We’ll explore how to trust your own instinct AND play well with others. We’ll learn how to accept what your brain gives you AND what your partner gives you. We’ll explore the relationship of character to laughter, story to laughter and being obvious. I promise that you will laugh during the workshop. Improv will help you build new material, work with the audience and find the ‘golden mistakes’ when things don’t go as planned.

WILLIAM HALL is an actor, improviser and teacher. He is the founder of BATS Improv in San Francisco. BATS Improv is the largest full time improv theatre and school in the Bay Area. He has studied extensively with improv theorist Keith Johnstone. He is a founding member of the San Francisco based Comedy Theater Group; Fratelli Bologna where he has helped create more than a dozen original comedies including the Holiday Comedy Classic "The Weber Christmas A charmingly blasphemous Yule tide tale". Fratelli Bologna was the first improv company to work at Disneyland. He developed and trained improv casts for Disneyland and the Queen Mary and trained the interactive characters for the World of Coke-a-Cola in Las Vegas. Currently William works with Fratelli Bologna to bring the power of theatre to businesses. Using traditional monologues, scenes, masks and improvisation to explore the dilemmas, challenges and opportunities that the future presents.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

$150 + $20 registration fee for the public; $75 for CIRCUS CENTER students; $20 for Professional Training Program students.

Zombie Jesus (Easter) Punk Rock Cabaret! April 11th!! Looking for Acts!

"Jesus Died for your sins.... now he's coming back for your BRAAAAIIIIINNNSSSS!!!!"

Its that time again; for another PUNK ROCK CABARET!
- brought to you by Vaudie Va-boom and the Oakland Pyrate Punx!
This time the theme is going to be "Zombie Jesus" - to celebrate the day the undead Jesus rose from the grave - EASTER!
The date is Saturday, April 11th, 2009
@ The Your House Warehouse
"Secret underground location" in Downtown Oakland.
Show is 7:30pm-12midnight
Performer call is at 6:30
$6-10 at the door, and guest list spots for performers.
All ages!

**We're looking for acts!!** ... bands, burlesque, freaks, fire, circus, dance, and anything else that will make for a horrifyingly awesome time!
We want all types of acts that can somewhat fit into the punk/zombie/jesus/easter/cabaret theme!
If you want some ideas, or have any questions, please ask!
...we're open to *pretty much* anything! :)
(And, we're looking for a zombified jesus look-a-like to be the MC!!!)
**Rehearsal space at the venue is available, and highly encouraged.
We also have table space for anyone looking to sell their merchandise at the show!

$ - Performers will be paid, but there will be no guarantee of amount.
The payment depends on what we make at the door.
The house takes 30% of the door, and the rest is split amongst performers accordingly.
Your payment will depend on how many acts you do, difficulty, audience draw, preparation, etc.
We also pay more for things like fire, boobies, dangerous feats, and out-of-towners!
The last show we did had a huge draw, and all 14 acts made AT LEAST $40 (many made more for the reasons explained above).

The PUNK ROCK CABARET is always a super fun, high energy show with a big rowdy crowd, and a great group of performers, and we would love to have you at our Zombie Jesus (Easter) PUNK ROCK CABARET to add to the fun!

Please reply if you are interested, and pass on to anyone else you think would be interested.
Depending on your act, I may require an audition or interview prior to adding you to the show.

Feel free to e-mail me (punkrockcabaret@hotmail.com) with any questions, concerns, comments, ideas, etc.

And, let me know if you're available ASAP, because the bill will fill up quick!

Love, blood, and ruffly underpants,
-Vaudie Va-boom!

Baby Doe Productions is proud to present a night with lots of special surprises and all proceeds for this evening will go to Keep A Breast Foundation!

Shindig 69
When: Thursday Feb 12th
Where: The Rickshaw Stop – 155 Fell Street, San Francisco
$10
Doors 8:30pm, Show 9pm
Proceeds to benefit Keep A Breast Foundation

This is a celebration of the Sixties when Go Go Girls ruled! This is Shindig 69. Featuring the rockin’ tunes of The Cement Gardens (members of The Sermon), DJ’s Cali Kid (Bardot A Go Go), Sergio Iglesias (Teenage Dance Craze), Otto von Stroheim (Tiki Oasis) Go Go sweethearts The Devil-Ettes, Kitten on the Keys, Kiki Bomb, Kellita, The Riff Ditties Orchestra, Alpenhorn and MUCH MORE! All proceeds benefit the Keep A Breast Foundation (www.keep-a-breast.org). The mission of Keep A Breast is to help eradicate breast cancer by exposing young people to methods of prevention, early detection and support through the arts.

Go Go music, Go Go dancers, and Go Go television shows dominated the 60s and kept kickin right into the 70s. But as 1969 heralded the end of a spectacular decade, so it also was the beginning of the end of the Go Go Era. While the Stooges* lamented 1969 as "another year with nothing to do," the Go Go-riffic Laugh-In was just hitting its stride as America's #1 TV comedy ('68 -'70).

While the Hippy movement and Psychedelia were becoming the new consciousness, across the U.S., and the rest of the world too, bouffanted, white-booted, mini skirted girls were kicking out the jams in their own way!

*That's Iggy Pop & The Stooges, not Larry, Curly, and Moe!
Valentine from a Stanford "Lover"

Stanford Drama teacher and actress, Kay Kostopoulos, will appear with piano jazz legend, Larry Vuckovich, in a Valentine's concert celebrating love and lust. The evening will begin with a cabaret of music, love letters and poetry from Byron, Browning, Bernhardt, Beethoven, Heloise and Abelard; followed by a music program that will include jazz standards, latin, and swing. " I thought the show would be a fun thing to do for the Palo Alto community, since many folks have taken class with me through Stanford’s Continuing Studies Program, or had seen me perform at Stanford Summer Theatre in Pinter's The Lover, and as the lusty "other woman", in Amy Freed's Restoration Comedy", says Kostopoulos. Kay also performs frequently in the Bing Music Program for patients and staff at Stanford Hospital.

After her sell out Valentine’s concert at the Dragon Theatre a few seasons ago, Kay chose the All Saint’s Church in Palo Alto for the venue, to feature dancing in the large, lovely space. There will be table seating for socializing, and wine and chocolates offered at intermission. Part of the proceeds will benefit the church and Palo Alto Community. "You can bring your Valentine, whether it's a lover, a dear friend, or your mom—or come solo and maybe meet someone at the dance…who knows?" says Kostopoulos.
Tickets will be sold in advance for $15.00, at the door for $20.

TINGEL TANGEL CLUB (SF) - Wed, Aug. 27 at The Bubble Lounge

The Burners are away, but Tingel Tangel Club still plays! Held on the last Wednesday of each month, Tingel Tangel is quickly becoming one of the Bay Area's must-attend events, a dance party cum performance salon where New York and West Coast performers and musicians mix it up. This month sees the return of DJ Nature Boy (Babies on Fire) who keeps the crowd dancing with an eclectic music mix that runs the gamut from ABC to LCD to OMD and back again, and after recently co-hosting (with Ana Matronic) a special one-off edition of Tingel Tangel Club at Deitch Studios in New York, Earl Dax takes the reigns as emcee. Brooklyn-based author and monologist Mike Albo brings his razor sharp satire and retro dance moves (Albo is the co-founder of the Dazzle Dancers) to the club while a rising star in New York's burlesque scene: La JohnJoseph. The evening proudly features Nath-Ann Carrera (The Judy Experience) in his first performance upon returning to San Francisco after several months in New York. Described as "heavenly" by the New York Times, Carrera last appeared in Justin Bond's "Lustre" and toured internationally with Big Art Group. Also in store... a short reading by San Franciso's own Michelle Tea, and funny man David Hawkins will be roaming this month's party with a video crew taping a "webisode" of Hawkin's "Qweirdo Show."

This month Tingel Tangel Club features a very special 'F to F' (that's female to female) salon hosted by the faux queens from New York City's Victoria party. They've brought their own crop of performers including the trombone-wielding Chereylnore and Queens Marie, a runner up in Murray Hill's recent Miss LEZ pageant. Joining the New York crew is San Francisco's trailblazing faux queen and former Miss Trannyshack, Fauxnique.

Looking ahead to the fall, Tingel Tangel Club is excited to welcome Lady Bunny (September 24); Penny Arcade (October 28) and Justin Bond (November 26).

(I apologize in advance for cross-posting.)
We are looking for a few boys and girls to join our punk/modern can-can troupe called the Can-Cannibals!
Check out our web page: http://cancannibalstroupe.googlepages.com/home

Auditions will be held on Saturday, August 9th from 2pm to about 5pm in Downtown Oakland. Please send me a message for the address.

Must be 18 yrs or older, and be able to make all rehearsals in Oakland!

These are a few things we would like to see of someone who wants to audition:
-We like people who stray away from the norm! (punks, goths, freaks, geeks, radicals & weirdos preferred)
-We like people who are into an underground scene. (we do mostly underground punk shows, and we wouldn't want you to get scared :)
-We like people who are laid back, but reliable (we like our rehearsals and shows to be as smooth running and drama free as possible)
-We want someone who wants to have fun! (we will not consider you if you're not a fun-lover :)
-We want someone who has attitude and charisma that will entrap the audience.

Invite your friends! (Both males and females welcome!)

Please respond with your dance/performance experience, and I will send you the address!

Thanks a lot!

I’m new to tribe and I’m trying to get the word out about what’s going on now in New Orleans for Circus Arts. The scene revolves around the Whirly Bones Circus Collective. We have a large studio just outside the french quarter and we offer free skill shares in circus arts and aerial classes five days a week! We offer hooping, acro, conditioning, juggling, yoga and clown lab. For fifteen dollars a month (yes, I said fifteen dollars) members can train and teach in the space. Next month the collective is putting on a showcase which includes acro-balance, aerial, juggling and more. Aurora Aerial is also based out of the space and will be holding auditions for an autumn run of shows on September 1st. There is a new aerial yoga class at Swan River Yoga Shala uptown as well. To learn more, visit our myspace at www.myspace.com/whirlybones or www.myspace.com/ravenhinojosa. Come check out or join our growing circus scene!

A colorful hilarious evening of dirty wholesome circus cabaret mayhem.
It's one of those shows that you'll just enjoy and wish would never end.

One weekend only!!

Friday May 2nd 8pm
Saturday May 3rd 8pm
Sunday May 4th 8pm
Up the road from the Powell Street Bart Station
http://www.stagewerx.org

Circus Finelli presents a Slavic slapstick cabaret with
daring comedy and dangerous cutlery. A one hour show of
Circus Comedy fraught with mishap. Come for sights to
entice and delight: juggling, cows, contortion, dance and disaster.

There is elaborate preshow entertainment where performers
improvise with the audience. Preshow includes face-painting,
and classic games like “Catch the Candy”. Circus Finelli is interactive, bright fun infused with the sounds of
This show has adult humor with kid sound effects.

Your host at a Circus Finelli show is man-hungry
ringmistress Madame Vinaigrette (Verka Zaskodna).
She is the Czech juggling bombshell with dangerous plans.
She can joke with the audience in seven different languages.
Her musical assistant and assailant is accordionista Luz
(Luz Gaxiola). Carmelita (Molly Shannon) is the
samba dancing ingénue with klutzish tendencies.
And last is Pepito, exploding from all corners.
“The Great Alecko; Strongest Man on Earth”,
will be appearing in the United States exclusively with
Circus Finelli. Known in Corsica as “The Swaggering Ox”,

The Wet Spots on tour - know any great venues in LA / Vegas?

Hello, all, Cass King here from Vancouver

We're booking a spring tour for our act the Wet Spots and we're always on the lookout for great venues and/or shows to play.
Right now we're particularly interested in SOCAL and VEGAS.
The Wet Spots are a musical sex comedy duo.
Our website is http://www.wetspotsmusic.com or myspace: thewetspots
a couple of years ago we released a video for our song "Do You Take It (In the Ass)" - you might know us from that.

What we look for in a great venue is:

- Cabaret or Burlesque or Variety or Supper Club style entertainment
- Seated audience
- Queer friendly / Sex Positive
- and ideally, equipped for musicians, though we can be er... flexible.

In NYC we play at The Box and Rififi and The Cutting Room and with people like Murray Hill and Julie Atlas Muz, to give you an idea of the tone of our show. In LA we've played Margaret Cho's Sensuous Woman show and Victory Variety hour at El Cid , which was a great venue, and at Three Clubs, which was very... um... dark.

If you know of a great show or venue, please let me know on this board or email me at cass at wetspotsmusic.com

thanks for your attention!

Cass King

Seeking Cape Cod/Boston Area Magicians For A Possible Open Mic Night

The owner of the Blackspot Cafe in Hyannis MA http://www.theblackspotcafe.com/ is interested in hosting a Magic Open Mic perhaps starting in February.

This would be on a monthly basis as is the poetry open mic he also hosts.

We had discussed the possibility of incorporating magic into the regular Wednesday open mic but the feeling is that the crowd might not be receptive. Magicians are of course welcome to perform any Wednesday as is any one else.

Micah the owner of the Blackspot is a magic enthusiast and would be interested in booking acts in the future as well.

So if you are interested then please get back to me and I will pass the word to Micah and set up the first date.

Need Card magician + for paid gig on 25th in S.F.

Sorry I'm in such a rush and this writing isn't more enticing...

- but it's on Oct. 25th, 7pm - 11pm intermittently for a private party in S.F.

Circus/Casino theme. I need a card magician and someone who can do three card monte/shell game, that sort of thing.

Doesn't need to be the same person, if that wasn't clear. Would rather have two separate people.

Paid.

Please contact me asap, or if you know of anyone send them my way.

Thanks!

Look at our photo albums to get a glimpse into our naughty little adult circus show and decide if you'd like to bring your chops to the table.
We are open to all disciplines of performance and most especially are looking for:
Burlesque (classic and modern ok), contortionists, knife throwers, bullwhip artists, singers (naughty lyrics a plus), aerial artists, magicians, ballet dancers, tap dancers, jazz/modern dancers, showgirls, midgets, freaks, and anything you would find at an entertaining circus-sideshow-vaudeville-burlesque showcase for adults.
What we do not currently need: Fire performers or bellydancers.
Come run away with the circus!
HUGS n JUGS

Romantasy Cabaret-Diabolique’s Dirty Little Secrets Second show is July 28 2007

Romantasy Cabaret, a hilarious, theatrical, adult-fun production was a smashing, sell out success at its maiden debut on June 30 2007. A second show will be held at Phoenix’ own Paper Heart Gallery at 750 NW Grand Avenue. The doors open at 8pm and the show begins at 8:30pm.
This unusual production will feature crass carnies, dancing dames, burlesque babes, saucy songstresses and fabulous freaks. Wander in and feel as if you have entered a circus sideshow complete with vintage-esque cigarette gals hawking candies and novelty items, as well as a boisterous Ring Mistress of Ceremonies to greet you on your way in.
With circus acts and burlesque shows making a comeback in modern day, this show is sure to hearken back to an age where buskers and tramps earned their living by performing odd or sexy acts for higher society. Lavish costumes, a dazzling show and uproarious silliness will entertain all who “Step right up”.

Lucy Morals, producer of Romantasy Cabaret, also directs Diabolique Unconventional Entertainment, the core cast who is sponsoring this show. Added special guests include a host of fine area entertainers including fire eaters, magic acts and tricks of the eye, and dazzling dancer numbers.
Lucy Morals has, herself, been performing in Arizona and California for five years and is one of the featured performers in the show as well.

The production is created and directed by Lucy Morals, hosted by Trash City Entertainment and is held at Paper Heart Gallery.
The show runs June 30, July 28, August 25, and September 29 2007.

$22 VIP Assigned, Reserved seating
$20 Reserved, assigned chair seating
$15 general admission, standing room only
Patrons must be 21 years or above to see the show. The material is for adult audiences and the venue has a bar.

Performers needed for variety night at 12 Galaxies on May 15th

PERFOMERS NEEDED for Spass Guerilla at 12 Galaxies on May 15th! The weirder, the sexier, the more absurd, the better. We encourage you to bring what you’ve got locked up in that closet and let it all hang out. Let your freak flag fly, at full mast! Fabulous prizes will be awarded!

Spass Guerilla, in short, is a radical pro/am open-mic variety show in the vein of the long running underground hit, Acid Cabaret. The show includes a panel of judges, a gong, a caged gorilla, an outrageous house band and much, much more. See where we’re going with this?

Spass has a three date run at 12 Galaxies - alternate Tuesdays starting May 15th. The three dates (so far) are May 15th, May 29th, and June 12th. We need more acts for May 15th in particular.

The opening night of Spass has been picked up by the Mission Creek Music Festival and will be featured as a pick of the week in SF Weekly on May 9th. This will be a well attended and highly publicized event. The night will be a mix of walk-ups and pre-arranged acts.

http://www.myspace.com/spassguerillasf & http://12galaxies.inticketing.com/evinfo.php?eventid=16168 (Add yourself to the MySpace page!)

Come to the shows, of course! But beyond that, put together an act for the show! COME PERFORM AT SPASS GUERILLA. WE NEED YOU. Let me know, roughly, what type of act you’re putting together and which date you want to come out for. Acts booked before show day gain free admission. Walk-ups, register at 8pm on May 15th at 12 Galaxies – 2565 Mission Street – http://www.12galaxies.com.

For booking, contact:
Cat Levy
cat@12galaxies.com or respond to this post.

SPASS GUERILLA
with Emcee Katy Bell
May 15th, May 29th, and June 12th,
Artist registration at 8 PM | Show at 9 PM
12 Galaxies, 2562 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA
$5 admission

SnatchBar, a genderbendy cabaret and burlesque show. AUDITIONS

We are looking to audition and lock in spots for the next few months this week. Our date in May is the 19th and the following date is June 23rd.
In the first two months of SnatchBar, we have had each of the performers have been top notch and for the next few months we are blessed to have a few celebrity musicians performing with us. We have a full band for the shows + genderbendy singers. We are excited to add burlesque acts who have the talent and the edge to make a great piece of music very exciting! Needless to say, we need to have a wonderfully balanced set of performers and we're looking to see them all now to book the perfect balance for each show.
We would love to see your act in person. The audition
consists of you coming in costume and bringing your cd to perform it. We are not looking for a particular genre just you moving from an honest place and performing the shit out of it. This is NOT a traditional cabaret experience and this month will feature some political acts and some genderbendy burlesque too. Your piece should not be "stripping" but it should be burlesque. We're not looking for a panty show but dancers who have invested in the art of burlesque.
We are auditioning at the Bootleg Theater 2220 Beverly Blvd. la (one block west of alvarado)
Auditions are today, Tuesday night from 830-10pm at the Bootleg. There will be a sound system for you to use.
We're looking forward to seeing you today!
Blessings.

Love
Artistic & Musical Directors of Snatchbar.

A message from MECDA's Central Board

May 2, 2007

A letter was mailed to MECDA members from a "Concerned Committee." This is our response which will be sent to All Mecda Members who have given us their email addresses.

MECDA was formed as an organization to improve wages and conditions for Bellydancers. We have accomplished that - and we have moved on to become a needed communications organization to provide unity and service to all dance communities throughout the United States.

As to our finances: We have a direct connection between receipts and 1099's to all payments, which are made by check; we have no credit cards. There is no money missing from MECDA.

We did pay a penalty to the IRS for one year when Treasurers were changing offices, and our statement was late. This was years ago, and it was not a big issue: Once in 30 years is a great record.

We have about 20 individuals working in the Central Board and the Cairo Carnivale. For them to receive an average of $1,300 a year means about $100 a month. This may not even account for the gas money they spend to do their job.

Officer qualifications change according to what computer skills are available for them to do their jobs in the best and easiest manner.
If an individual on the Board does not perform competently, they are replaced.

We had a request to sub out our 'treasurer' position to an accountant. He would only enter our materials into "Quicken," no judgement of the appropriateness of the invoice, no response to members, no attendance at meetings. Data entry is only a small part of what the MECDA Treasurer does. He was not useful to us.

Obviously, all MECDA members are valued and treated equally. Each MECDA member pays a maximum of $50 to join - they receive $74.00 worth of publications (Chronicles, Happenings, Directory) in return, as well as discounts on events and products. We make up for the difference between this amount and your membership fee from revenue generated by the Cairo Carnivale.

The individuals who sent you that letter didn't even trust you to vote the way they want even after reading their distortions and lies. They expect you to send them your blank ballot with the required envelope to them - so they can vote instead of you!

The current MECDA Board has worked very hard to accomplish communications, events, and services for members across the country.

FYI:

MECDA'S CODE OF CONDUCT includes the following: "Personal information obtained in private will be respected as such. Members will not repeat gossip that could be detrimental to the welfare and happiness of others."

AND Furthermore:

Article IX of the MECDA Bylaws states: "Names, addresses, phone numbers and other pertinent information of and about MECDA members will be kept in confidence by the officers so entrusted for the sole reason of conducting MECDA affairs, and will not be released without permission of the specific member(s) involved."

It is unknown at this time who provided the confidential names and addresses of MECDA's membership, but this situation is currently under investigation. If the person(s) involved in releasing the confidential information are discovered, pertinent action will be taken.

Please contact all members in your chapters and all of your MECDA friends and encourage them to send in their OWN ballots!

Thank You,

The Current MECDA Board.
Music of our Great Soul Brothers!

Hello Everyone,

The new show I am doing with a dear friend and a Boston native, Mr. Gordon Michaels. The show is called "Music of Our Great Soul Brothers" This is a fast paced fun show with the music of James Brown, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge, Eddie Floyd, Sam & Dave, Al Green, Lou Rawls, and a few more. The show is selling really well but would love to have some of you out to see us and get to meet all of you. So if you are in the NYC area come take this ride with us. And for those of you who are not, a Thursday night road trip would be great fun!

The show is at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at Helens Hideaway Room, 169 Eighth Ave., New York, between 18th and 19th streets. Doors open at 6. Reservations are recommended! Reservations are taken from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. at (212) 206-0609.

Gordon is no stranger to the stage, he’s been performing since he was a young child, and has graced the stage in such shows as “Five Guys Named Moe” “Ain’t Misbehaving” and “Smokey Joes Café.” This is his third New York City Cabaret – the last two were his Nat King Cole tribute show at the now-closed Danny’s Skylight Room, and he got terrific reviews for that show.

I expect some industry types to be there, so if you could come fill the room, that would be fantastic for all of us.

I would also consider it a favor to me, if each of you could pass this message and info on to one other person, so we can get a full house and have a great time in the process.

Thanks!

Helens is at . Come have am awesome time and stroll down memory lane. Helen’s takes reservations from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., and it would help if you reserved your seat, so the folks at Helen’s can want us to come back soon!

2007 Production-Romantasy Cabaret-Diabolique's Dirty Little Secrets
We still have some slots open for positions in our 2007 production as well as some understudy positions.
Ladies n germs-we are looking at YOU! You provide your own costumes, out of your own pocket in almost all cases. Some pieces have loaner costuming but it is not the norm. We will train you in group pieces and in staple production positions (ring leader, cig gal, etc...) but you (self-motivated much?) have your own fab talent (or pair of talents!) to share with us. Message me directly to pitch your idea. Thus far, to give you a basic idea of the show, we have Sassy Dancing lassies, Bawdy Burlesque babes, frisky fire twirlers and spinners, crass comics, and even a lil songstress. We are wide open for more takent to come join our freaks du jour.

Cigarette Girl- Not really a performance part as much as walking through the crowd pimping our shtufff

Little Egypt- Bellydancer- Campy, old hollywood bellydance version of a harem girl belly dancer. Msg me for more specifics.

Living Dolls- Dancing and skit with Vaudevillian "dolls"

Peek a Boo-Dance and suggestive, flirty parasol dance.

Fever- any version-I am open to interpretations

We also need a promotions table person.

Other openings:
This is where it gets really fun! Are you creative, self-motivated, not really able to work in groups due to your own hectic schedule?
YOU come up with your own imaginative piece. Let me know when you have it all done and run it by me. You can then audition it for the cast to see if it will fit in with our production. This is a show that will feature burlesque (NO nudity), bawdy adult humor, skits, singing, dancing, tricks and magic, and so on. Think theatrical, laughter-invoking or mesmerizing. Think circus sideshow. Think old vaudeville, Think freakshow. Think old hollywood, campy, cheesecake. Think pin up girls, dancing girls, other eras and times. This is NOT a belly dance production. Open to drag queens! We really are open to so many of your fab ideas-sword swallowing, impersonators, magic, stilt walkers, unicycle riders, contortionists, burlesque dancers (not strippers), hoopers, twirlers, and so on.
In most cases you will provide your own costuming. We are self funded (for now) so this comes out of each performer's own pocket for the time being. Investors are being sought, however.
Please inquire within.
This production will be the likes of something Phoenix has not yet seen from a local act. Be a part of it, or be in the audience!

We have the production already in the works with several pieces already completed, but there is still time to add in your piece! Message me straight away if you need more info.
Our house circus troupe, portraying the true-life Victorian circus of ringmaster William Batty, acts as a framing device for traveling circus troupes from all around the country. This month, we receive a visit from the last genuine traveling freakshow in the United States – Thee 999 Eyes Ov Endless Dream – who are being tailed from city to city by a film crew from The National Geographic Channel.

THEE 999 EYES OV ENDLESS DREAM
www.999eyes.com
Lost in time, hidden in the dark corners and in the dusty shelves of old book stores, in the basements of libraries and museums, lies the fabulous, fantastical history of the carnival sideshow - a time when the malformed were glamorized as part of a traveling caravan and not locked up in institutions. A time when there was a place and venue for amazing performers to come together in a gypsy caravan style and change the atmosphere of the town around them - reminding people there is another way of life and relieving people of their daily routines - reminding them of the power of magic and imagination. The roots of radical artistic movements of today are deeply intertwined with the carnival sideshows of the past…
We acknowledge our carnival sideshow roots to empower our communities with alluring, inventive, and fearless displays of imagination and dream! Our carnival sideshow not only provides a place for roving gypsy carnival performers and “human curiosities” to express their art but also provides an environment which revives and highlights the great performers and “freaks” of the past – and their true life stories! Using olde-tyme music, puppets, story telling as well as classic carnival sideshow acts and performance we create a world that taps into profound emotion, reminding the AUDIENCE of the actualization of the living dream. At the same time, this gives the “human curiosities” of the modern age a venue to be appreciated once again - this is our mission.
Our collaborative carnival art troupe is co-created with many fabulous idividuals - musicians, sideshow artists, clowns, writers, experts - each of which works on their routines, props, banners, and costumes in their locale. Each on its own is amazing, and together, we form our carnival ov dreams. We tour selectively, displaying our “History of the FREAKSHOW” museum installation, with a real life modern day freakshow and sideshow for our openings. With all ages kid-themed shows(dream shows) as well as adult-themed “nightmare” performances, our carnival sideshow does well at what we aim to do. We’re recreating the world one carnival at a time – awakening the collective subconscious.
The psyche is never laid so bear as when entering the world ov dream… Our demons and dreamers are assembled in an ever evolving Multi-Form Cabinet containing enough skeletons to squeeze the tears and fears ov even the coldest heart… For we all have dreams, and we all have nightmares… When we enter into the waking dream of beauty and art in life, we realize how real our dreams really are. Staring at our hands, we consider all that they can accomplish, for good or ill. We present our WAKING DREAMS and NIGHTMARES for your perusal… as an actual, real, living, modern day museum ov oddities style freakshow is paraded before your awe-inspired eyes! With a musical background ranging from Old-tyme gypsy jug band to eldritch accordion “eville” puppet madness… all this and more can become available for the entertainment and horror ov THE AUDIENCE, which has the opportunity to sign on the dotted line (in blood) and sell their soul for a glimpse into another world ov phantasmagoric dream!

CORE
www.wearecore.com
Among the founding suspension performers on Earth, up from Los Angeles and Houston for a visit to Cascadia.
"It is our intent to create original and physically demanding works of theatre by blending the practice of modern performance art with ancient rituals of body suspension.
We in CoRE have suspended our own concept of physical limitation, pierced the heart of our fears, and transcended the boundaries of social convention in order to further the understanding of the corporeal and spiritual being. Suspension acts combined with traditional performance art and theatre provide us with a new outlet for artistic expression that enables the audience to join us on our emotional journey. By pushing our own boundaries in life and art, we inspire others to explore their own."

THE ALBERTA CLOWN HOUSE
www.clownhouse.org
A nationally-revered waystation for traveling clown society, led by Dingo Dizmal and Caffeine Enema Jones and featuring at one time or another every punk clown worth his or her salt.

A DICTIONARY OF BLOOD THEATER
"In a sense, there is no true, "real" theatre, only a black Cadillac crushing life and squeezing the heart out of us, one act at a time. It is appropriate then, that we cry, and mourn crushed lives, appropriate to watch as well as to perform. Why puppets? Because, by branch and root, from head to foot, there is not, nor art there be, anything so deep so sad so fun so thought-provoking so shamelessly despised so unrehearsed and prized as the beautiful blank darkness that descends upon you as the flesh is opened to let another story bleed forth.
The first installation of our new show Local man claims to have seen god but can't give an account of what he saw (Decipher that!) opens October 27 and runs throught the next two nights at the Someday lounge in Portland Oregon, moving to other venues down the west coast through October and November. This program deals with the erosion of sanity in the modern world. It is a puppetry program, including live actors and found objects, trash and treasures paraded before you eyes."
www.somedaylounge.com/perform..._theater

LEAPIN' LOUIE LICHTENSTEIN
www.comedytricks.com
Leapin' Louie performs a high energy comedy show featuring cowboy tricks, juggling, acrobatics, music and what-not. He inflames audiences to laughter and wild applause everywhere he plays and that’s a lot of wheres because he has appeared at corporate events, festivals, fairs, schools, etc., in twenty-one different nations.
Say it in one breath for a true feeling of jet lagged exhilaration. Leapin' Louie Lichtenstein has knocked them alive in:
USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Morocco, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan.
Whoa! Take a breath.

AUBREY BIRDWELL
www.somedaylounge.com/perform...irdwell/
Aubrey Birdwell is a prodigous young gypsy accordionist notorious in all corners of Portland. His work with Cicuri Curajul and Mirumir; and his solo work both with traditional and modified accordions; has distinguished him as one of the most skilled and innovative players in this city. He presents the incidental music for this evening, including a mix of traditional romany songs and his own compositions.

Gig trade w/ Phat Man Dee!

Hi!!! My name is Phat Man Dee and I am looking to trade gigs with other phabulous entertainers. Immediately I am looking to perform in NYC/ Brooklyn around July 20th. I have a show that night at Starshine Burleqsue at Ra Fi Fi in the E. Village , but would love to do something maybe the night before or after in the area or even in Philadelphia. I am a jazz singer with tendencies towards
bluegrass and comedic burlesque. I have toured with the Goddess Perlman, Candeye Kane, the Bindlestiff Family Cirkis, Circus Rediculous, and the Fat Bottomed Girls Burlesque Review. You may see my website online:
htttp://www.phatmandee.com/
and press kit:
www.sonicbids.com/phatmandee/

I would really like to make this a 2 way thing, I am based in Pittsburgh, PA (home of the Warhol Museum, Fred Rogers, Jeff Goldblum, the Goddess Perlamn, Gene Kelly. Billy Strayhorn, the most bridges of any city in America, that annoyingly catchy "Play That Funky Music White boy" song , and as well we have the largest concentration of Jews between Brooklyn and Israel) and I love to show off my hometown. If you can get me a gig to share with you in your hometown, I will find a booking for you here. As I said, I am immediately looking for something in NYC, but would love to explore more of this great nation of ours.

I'm doing a show on Tuesday, Jan 31st at a traveller's hostel in San Francisco and am trying to get a mix of performers - ie contortionists, floor performers, belly dancers, jugglers, magicians, etc. If there are any performers who would be interested in practicing in front of a large mix of European travellers, please contact me. We have free beer and chips, and it's a very fun, laid back and friendly place to perform. Lots of interesting people to meet.

Looking for Cabaret Shows!

People with unusual music, song and dance or unusual acts of any sort (puppet shows to glass eaters) who are looking to be on a Saturday night show, I'm booking shows at the Stork Club in Oakland these days. I also have Tuesdays and Sundays available as well.

Please! No rock or singer/songwriter unless you ditch the guitars and replace 'em with tubas. My idea of an unusual show is, well go to my website and take a look around:

http://www.davidkaye.us

Oh, and by the way, I have Tranny Rock Night on Tuesday November 29 at the Stork, featuring Lipstick Conspiracy (a tight band that has been getting a lot of press lately) and opener, Kielbasa, everybody's main squeeze.

And on the 13th, an all-Western and rockabilly show.

On the 15th, an all Balkan show (Bulgariand and Greek rembetika!)

The Stork is becoming THE place to go to see the unusual and offbeat at popular (that is, LOW) prices!

MECDA Membership Survey

Hello all! I’m the new MECDA membership officer and I’ve decided to conduct a survey of MECDA members and non-members in order to better MECDA based on your suggestions. Any questions that you can answer would be a great help. We do not need complete surveys so if there are any questions you would prefer not to answer then feel free to leave them blank. Thank you!
Please send your replies to membership@mecda.org or membership_blaize@direcway.com

For members:
1)	What do you think is the best benefit of having a MECDA membership?

2)	What sort of changes would you like to see within MECDA?

5)	Which MECDA events are you favorite?

6)	Would you like to see a themed MECDA event? If so, what type of themes would you like to see?

7)	Are you a member of any other belly dance organizations, clubs, groups, etc?

8)	Any other comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

For non-members:
1)	Why haven’t you joined MECDA?

2)	Could we add any benefits to membership that would make it worth your while to join?

3)	Do you attend MECDA events?

"The Belly Dance Bag" survey :)

Hello fair dancers wherever you are...

I am currently working on a marketing idea for a university project, and I would love your help gathering primary research. If you would please fill out this survey and either post your answers or send them to me via email it would be much appreciated. I am making a few prototypes, and should this idea get good feedback, I am considering making them for sale.

The concept: A tote bag made for and by belly dancers to carry all the tid-bits, odds n’ ends, and variety of costume parts and props that we all lug around to classes and gigs.

The survey is below. If you would like it in Word format, let me know and I will send it to you as an email attachment.

INTERNATIONAL HIPSTER COALITION
*******************************
*WE'RE RECLAIMING THE NAME, DAMNIT!*

http://tribes.tribe.net/internationalhipstercoalition?r=10448#

"HIPSTERS, FLIPSTERS & FINGER POPPIN' DADDIES, KNOCK ME YOUR LOBES..."
~ LORD BUCKLEY

*NO TREND-FOLLOWING, DADDY'S-MONEY-SPENDIN', USERS OF THE WORD "URBAN" FOR THE URBANE, HIPPIE-WANNA-BE, SPOILED, CLUB-CRAWLIN', DIME-A-DOZEN, BLAND PANTY-WAISTS HERE!!!

We welcome all REAL hipsters... What's the definition?

hip?ster (hip?ster)
noun

[Formed from hip2 + -ster]

Slang.

1. a person who is hip.
2. hepcat.
3. a person, (esp. during the 1950s), characterized by a particularly strong sense of alienation from most established social activities and relationships.
4.someone who rejects the established culture; advocates extreme liberalism in politics and lifestyle.

This can and does include all outside thinkers, RAB guys 'n gals, cool poets and musicians, jazz lovers, bebop kats 'n kittens, hepcats, outside thinkers, those who really don't give a shite what others think, quick witted, nifty folks from all backgrounds.

This does NOT include the annoying wankers with too much money to spend and little else to do but blow it in cheesy dance clubs sporting the latest trends and repeating shite they heard on Friends or blathering about what happened on whatever crappy-assed "reality" show they watched last night.

That means that if you have the gall to utilize and misappropriate the term HIPSTER (as much as you have the word "urban") and add friggin' URBAN in front of it, GET LOST! The urban thing be so nuthin' anymore, it ain't funny and it just makes ya look like every other cargo pant advertisement out there. You're as original as a GAP commercial and twice as boring as a COLORS magazine! - SHOO! BUGGER OFF!

The rest of you - you poets, musicians, thrift shop savvy, sharp as a tack in the best of ways folks - you know who you are! C'MON IN!!!

Best,

hi,
we're producing something at the fringe that is trying to encorporate a cabaret show and a kind of facilitated party. what i mean by that is that we have people/actors at the party that kind of direct the intereactions that the audience/party goers have. We want to be fun and sexy and thoughtful. any suggestions?

Scot Nery's //Crash Course// Last two months in San Francisco

http://www.CrashCourseShow.com

Here are the themes for the upcoming shows:
M5 - Really Old People
M12 - Fast Food
M19 - Tasty Taxidermy (stuffed food) Guest: Brian Asman (chef)
M26 - Science Vs. Religion
J2 - Burlesque Brunch (sleasy food)
J9 - 3d Foodie
J16 - Suprise (special unknown show)
J23 - Final Week:: How to do a Live Cooking Show

May 5-7 = THEME: Really Old People

We see old people everywhere. Some of us see them when they look in a mirror or when they
look in their fridge… But what about the really old people (I’m not talking about 30 year
olds). These folks have worked hard to become old and are ignored by society. Look
around, how many buildings do you see with iron-lung access?

Forget the children, this one’s for the goats left behind by our modern world. “What…” you
say, “… is this all about.” Come to Crash Course if you’d like to find out. You won’t
understand it after the show either, but you’ll be happier.

May 12-14 = THEME: Fast Food

People fast for many different reasons -- cleansing, poverty, ballet, etc. There are different
kinds of fasts. This week, we’ll find out which fasts include the most grub. Sure, the food
isn’t very satisfying, but neither is life!

Hey, beautiful people.

I've recently been taken on as the official Freak Wrangler for a band called The Dresden Dolls, ( www.dresdendolls.com ) a duo (piano & drums) from Boston who are going on their second tour overseas in mid February, and I need talented people in the below cities.

Part of the magic that they create is due to some of their more talented fans, who create a very distinct and ever-changing atmosphere, and we call these people The Dresden Dolls Brigade. We’re looking for everything, from human statues to acrobatics to Klowns to misfortune tellers to pretty much anything you can dream up! This makes it something of a more interactive and certainly more delightful show for everybody.

I was wondering if anyone out there knows people in the below cities that they think would be well suited for this. If you do, please let me know and forward this information to them. This is unpaid, but they will get be an important part of an amazing and fun show, have an absolute blast, and of course get in for free. Please let me know as soon as possible if you know of anyone – including yourself, if you happen to be in one of these places at the time.

If you've made it this far, below are the places, links, and more information. Please feel free to contact me at thebrigade@dresdendolls.com with any questions or if you want to participate.

Thanks!

~ Casey

We are recruiting performers of all shapes and talents and levels of freakiness to join us in decorating these fine establishments with living art and moderately controlled chaos.

Note: We are not offering to fly people to these places. We can't right now. We are looking for people already in them who want to be a part of something amazing, that is growing by the second, who have a beautiful creativity that they like to share, and make other people exteremely happy.

Here are the tour dates and venues"

new tribes: small CHUNKS OF WRITING, Our Dreams

I have started a couple new tribes in the past month that you may be interested in. From the Beloved Bay Area...to S. Korea, the tribes are all about dreamy droppy stuff oozing out of stem slappin' places, Oh!...and writing...

The dreams tribe is caled Our Dreams

ourdreams.tribe.net

Writing tribe: (the unfortunate name of) small CHUNKS OF WRITING

smallchunksofwriting.tribe.net

Why chunks? I don't know...it is what came out at the time...

I just posted an exercise on "The Troubled Vision" which is all about writing from a different slant of reality...TV snow coming from walls, or the Virgin Mary in a lint drawer...things smiling at you while others stare blankly.

I was in Settle recently, where a vaudeville undercurrent
is rising up with the longstanding groups of
Circus Contraption and the Cirque du Flambe
each producing events,
and Pyroboy himself Wally Glenn
hosting nights at his fine
collective production/consumption establishment,
the Lower Level in Capitol Hill.

I hear that Protland Oregon has some shows worth seeing,
and the SF favorites, the Yard Dogs Road Show
just retuned from LA for a great show at Ascension
at 1015 Folsom this week.

What's going on in your area?

Tips for Street Performing?

I'm about to head to Central America for a few months, and I'm going to need to find work while travelling. I'm bringing my stilts and some costumes... Any advice for street perfoming? I've never done any street performing for money, just performance art and guerrilla theater. I don't juggle (yet), I don't play guitar or accordian. I can drum, I can sing, I can dance and stilt-walk like a m*ther-f*cker, and I'm generally crazy, although don't like broken bones. I'll be travelling with another fun person who I'll be treaching to walk on stilts as we go.

Thanks!

What's showing in town?

So I've seen the flyers, I've heard some bad reveiws. If I want to go somewhere and lay my bucks down for an evening that I will be entertained where do I go? I love Vaudeville style entertainment. If there are any burlesque shows about I might want to check them out, but I want more entertainment than booty being shook. I know that some people have got to be doing something in this town, where's it at?
